THE CONTINUING AND WORLD-WIDE POPULARITY of van Gogh is one of the most curious phenomena in the history of this century's taste. On the surface several other painters would seem to have very much more in their favour if subject matter be the standard of consideration. The voluptuous girls of Renoir have a healthy eroticism about them quite absent in van Gogh's work. Toulouse-Lautrec offers a glimpse into a recognizable underworld, witty, colourful and lively, with an immediacy of impact in his posters which continues to fascinate. Munch and Beardsley and, rather differently, Turner, Constable and Monet ha ve a more ob vious appeal and there is a host of lesser artists whose subjects are virtually their only claim to wide success. What has van Gogh to offer in these terms? A pair of old shoes, a deal chair, the gaslit terrace of a back-street café. As one commentator has pointed out, it is his early work from Holland that should have a more universal appeal in terms of subject - the intense scenes of fields and heathland, deserted gardens, labourers and peasant families. Yet, for most people van Gogh is the painter of Provence, of cornfields, sunflowers, cypresses.
