The Big Rigs are the tractor-trailer trucks that run the highways of America. These chromed and custom-painted eighteen-wheelers roll night and day, year round, delivering the goods. Whatever it is, it came by truck.
To the consumer, fleet operator and shipper, trucks are economical work-horses able to perform fast and direct distribution of freight. To the trucker, though, his rig is more than just a meal ticket. It is his home for days or weeks on end, and in the case of the independent owner operator, it is his means of self expression. His investment must not only perform, it must also look good.
As masters of these mighty machines, the long-haul truckers are without doubt the Kings of the Road. In such a motorized society as 20th century America it is fitting that the trucker is at last being recognized as a true folk hero. He is the modern day embodiment of the pioneer spirit. In the tradition of American heroes, he is something of a loner, with his own code and culture.
Trucking is a way of life, with its own perspective on the world. It is a job with dignity and plenty of responsibility. It has its heartaches and it has its high times. It offers independence and a whiff of freedom, but for most who get behind the wheel of a semi truck, it soon becomes an obsession.
The culture which has evolved around the trucker is all-embracing. His own needs are catered for along with those of his vehicle. Everything he needs can be found alongside the highway. He can eat, sleep, relax and do his shopping at truck stops. Truckers' magazines inform and entertain, radio stations across the country broadcast truckers' shows. Records telling some of his story reach the national charts. Movies feature trucks and truckers as symbols of the independent rugged American.
