The term two-foot gauge in this volume is used to inciude railways from 22 to 24 ins (56 to 61 cms).
North Wales had slate quarry railways of about 2 ft gauge from the early part of the nineteenth century; from Penrhyn in 1801 and from Dinorwic in 1825. No expianation for the use of this dimenson is known.
The desire to link a group of slate quarries further south to a new harbour on the Cambrian coast resulted in an Act of Parliament in 1832 for the construction of the Festiniog Railway, to a gauge of "under three feet". Downhill traffic was worked by gravity and horses were used uphill but, in the early years, there were two inclines on the route as well.
The FR made news in the railway engine-
ering world in 1863 when it successfully applied
steam traction to this small gauge, contrary to
the earlier opinions of notable engineers such as
Robert Stephenson. A further unique and major
development took place on this remote and
isolated little railway in 1865 when passenger
conveyance commenced. Consent for this
involved approval by one of Her Majesty's Board
of Trade inspecting officers of railways, Captain
H.W.Tyler RE. He considered this such a
remarkable and unusual development that he
took the rare step of addressjng the Institution of Civil Engineers on the subject.
